How Latisse® Works to Give You Long, Luscious Lashes

You’ve seen the ads and wondered if Latisse® is too good to be true. Can a medication really regrow your eyelashes? Let’s find out.

The discovery of Latisse® — the miracle eyelash thickener — was a happy accident. Patients who used bimatoprost, a medication to treat glaucoma, noticed that their eyelashes were getting longer and thicker. A little research and some rebranding, and voila, Latisse was born.

Latisse is a prescription medication that contains bimatoprost, but the format and usage is much different than for folks with glaucoma. And if not used correctly, there are some potential side effects, so make sure you get yours from an experienced and knowledgeable medical professional like Dr. Robert Topham at Holladay Dermatology & Aesthetics in Holladay, Utah.

Our team of aesthetic experts understands your skin — and your lashes — from the inside out, and we offer Latisse as part of our overall professional skincare services. If you’re thinking about trying Latisse to lengthen your sparse or missing eyelashes, here’s what you need to know.

Are you a good candidate for Latisse?

Before you use Latisse, it’s important to know if it’s right for you. The best candidates are those who:

  • Have lost eyelashes due to aging
  • Have lost eyelashes due to chemotherapy
  • Want thicker, longer eyelashes

You should not use Latisse if you have certain eye health conditions, such as eyelid dermatitis, uveitis, or ocular hypertension to name a few.

Is Latisse safe to use?

Yes, Latisse is safe when used as prescribed, and it’s approved by the Food and Drug Administration to make your lashes longer, thicker, and stronger.

What are the potential side effects of Latisse?

Most people use Latisse with no negative side effects at all. However, some people notice that the whites of their eyes take on a slight red tinge. Others say it causes dry, itchy eyes. It’s also possible for Latisse to darken the color of your irises and your eyelids. If you allow the mediation to touch your skin when you apply it, over time, it may cause hair growth in those places.

How does Latisse work?

The active ingredient in Latisse, bimatoprost, elongates the stage of eyelash growth, which means there’s more opportunity for lengthening and thickening. It also results in an increased number of new eyelashes, so you notice an increase in volume, as well.

How long do Latisse results last?

You apply Latisse daily with a mascara-like wand to your upper lashes. It takes about a month for the results to become visible, and they will continue to improve for as long as you use Latisse. If and when you stop using Latisse, your lashes will likely return to their sparse state.

To find out if Latisse is right for you, schedule a consultation to talk with Dr. Topham or one of our knowledgeable team members. If you’re a good candidate, you can have thicker, fuller lashes in time for spring. Call us at 801-272-4408 today.
